Mary Quon Moy Ing Memorial Scholarship (deadline 11:59 p.m. PST, April 21, 2020)
- In honor of Mary Quon Moy Ing, AAJA will award up to $2,000 to a currently enrolled college student or graduating high school senior who is interested in pursuing journalism as a career. (Please note: AAJA’s scholarship policy requires that funds be disbursed directly to the student’s financial institution or student loan provider. Please only apply if your tuition costs or student loans exceed the scholarship amount.)
- Applicants must be committed to AAJA’s mission.
- Applicants must demonstrate journalistic excellence, a strong interest in pursing journalism as a career, and a commitment to community involvement.
- Applicants must be a graduating high school senior, undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full time with at least 12 credit units each semester for the fall of 2019 and spring of 2020. Applicants must be currently taking or planning to take journalism courses and/or pursing journalism as a career.
- Candidates will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated journalistic ability, financial need, commitment to the field of journalism and/or sensitivity to Asian American/Pacific Islander issues. AAJA student membership is encouraged for all applicants and required for the selected scholarship recipients.
- You will be required to submit the following:
- A current, one-page resume
- An official high school or college transcript
- One letter of recommendation from a professional who is familiar with your academic and/or journalism work (a counselor, professor, supervisor, etc.)
- Optional work samples for photo, print/online and broadcast students (in PDF, JPG or link formats)
CIC/Anna Chennault Scholarship (deadline 11:59 p.m. PST, April 21, 2020)
- AAJA will award one graduating high school senior or current college student a scholarship from the CIC/Anna Chennault Foundation. $5,000 will go towards the student’s college education. The selected student will receive travel, lodging and registration to attend AAJA’s national annual convention in Washington, D.C., July 29 – August 1. Depending on the winner’s area of study, the student will also be paired with a professional print, online or broadcast mentor at the convention to help them network. (Please note: AAJA’s scholarship policy requires that funds be disbursed directly to the student’s financial institution or student loan provider. Please only apply if your tuition costs or student loans exceed the scholarship amount.)
- Applicants must be committed to AAJA’s mission.
- Applicants must be a graduating high school senior that has been accepted to a U.S. college (proof of acceptance required) or a currently enrolled college student.
- AAJA membership is not required for the application but if selected, the student must sign up for student membership.
- Candidates will be judged on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated journalistic ability, commitment to the field of journalism and/or sensitivity to Asian American and Pacific Islander Issues.
- You will be required to submit the following:

Vincent Chin Memorial Scholarship (deadline 11:59 p.m. PST, April 21, 2020)
- Vincent Chin’s legacy lives on. The brutal attack that took his life occurred late at night with few people around, but its reverberations spread across the country and have lasted for decades. Asian Americans came together to demand justice and found a common voice and purpose. Yet questions remain and justice goes undelivered. In honor of Chin and thanks to the generosity of Joe Grimm, a former newsroom recruiter and staff development editor for the Detroit Free Press, AAJA has established a college scholarship. This $500 scholarship rewards an accomplished, community-minded student journalist for an insightful, articulate essay related to Chin and his legacy. (Please note: AAJA’s scholarship policy requires that funds be disbursed directly to the student’s financial institution or student loan provider. Please only apply if your tuition costs or student loans exceed the scholarship amount.)

Stanford Chen Internship Grant (deadline 11:59 p.m. PST, April 21, 2020)
- In honor of the late Stanford Chen, AAJA will award news internship grants in the amount of $2,000, available to college juniors, seniors and graduate students who have secured an internship at a news outlet for print, online, broadcast or photography work. This grant is open to women and men of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. Applicants who will be interning at small- to medium-sized outlets will receive priority (applicants interning at a large-sized outlet are still encouraged to apply).
- Applicants have a serious interest in pursuing journalism as a career.
- Applicants must be currently enrolled full time (spring 2020) at an accredited university.
- Applicants must have secured a 2020 summer internship before applying for the internship grant. The stipend is to be used toward living expenses and/or transportation during your internship and may not be used for any college expenses. Accepted applicants will be required to sign a waiver acknowledging this.
- AAJA student membership is strongly encouraged for all applicants, but not required to apply. Those selected to receive grants will be required to sign up for AAJA student membership.

William Woo Print/Online News Internship Grant (deadline 11:59 p.m. PST, April 21, 2020)
- AAJA will award one grant in the amount of $2,000 in honor of William Woo to support a print or online news intern of any racial or ethnic background and give him/her an opportunity to practice daily journalism while gaining valuable career-building experience.
- Applicants must be committed to AAJA’s mission.
- Applicants must have a serious interest in pursuing journalism as a career in the print or online field.
- Applicants must be a full-time college student or recent college graduate (within one year).
- Applicants must have secured a 2020 summer internship at a print or online news outlet/company before applying for this internship grant.
- AAJA membership is not required to apply, but is strongly encouraged. Student membership will be required for the selected candidate.
- This stipend is to be used toward living expenses/transportation during the internship. The selected candidate will sign a waiver acknowledging this.
- You will be required to submit the following:
- A current, one-page resume
- One letter of recommendation from a professional who is familiar with your academic and/or journalism work (a counselor, professor, supervisor, etc.)
- Verification of your internship (acceptance letter, etc.)
Sam Chu Lin and Lloyd LaCuesta Broadcast Internship Grants (deadline 11:59 p.m. PST, April 21, 2020)
- One internship grant in the amount of $500 will be awarded to a student broadcaster in honor of the late Sam Chu Lin. This grant is open to women and men of all racial and ethnic backgrounds who have secured an internship in television or radio.
- One grant in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to an aspiring male television broadcaster from the Lloyd LaCuesta Scholarship Fund. This grant is open to any Asian/Pacific Islander male who has secured an internship in television.
- Applicants may apply to both grants if they meet eligibility requirements for both grants.
- Applicants must be full-time college students or recent college graduates (within one year).
- Applicants must have secured a 2020 summer internship before applying for the internship grant. The stipend is to be used toward living expenses and/or transportation during your internship. Accepted applicants will be required to sign a waiver acknowledging this.
- AAJA student membership is strongly encouraged for all applicants, but not required to apply. Those selected to receive grants will be required to sign up for AAJA student membership.
