AAJA Philly joins the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists in condemning the Philadelphia Inquirer’s racially insensitive “Buildings Matter, Too” headline from June 2, 2020, and in demanding that the newspaper make specific changes to prevent this from happening again. We also stand with the Inquirer’s journalists of color, specifically Black journalists, who are already dealing with trauma from the ongoing pandemic and protests against police violence, and are now further upset by actions from within their own newsroom. The long and intensive process to build trust with underrepresented/misrepresented communities disproportionately falls onto the shoulders of journalists of color, and incidents like these set back our work by years. Accountability is not an option, it is a requirement.
