EVENT: How to Make It as a Freelancer

No full-time job? No problem. At next month’s AAJA Philly event, learn from AAJA members and other local journalists who are making a living freelancing. Their stories, videos and photos have been published in outlets like The New York Times, Reuters, The Washington Post, NPR, Philadelphia Magazine, and WHYY. In this panel discussion, we’ll go over how to get your start, how to pitch and how to make sure you get paid. Coffee and donuts will be served.

When: 3 to 5 PM, Sunday, April 19
Where: Temple University, in Annenberg Hall, basement, room 3 (on 13th Street, between Norris and Diamond)
Cost: Free for chapter members, $3-5 donations for public

Panelists/Moderators:

Meeri HeadshotMeeri Kim, PhD is a science journalist who contributes regularly to The Washington Post and Philly Voice. Her work has also appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer, Edible Philly, and Oncology Times. She has been living in Philadelphia since 2005, and received her PhD in physics from the University of Pennsylvania last year. Her favorite things include odd flavors of ice cream, karaoke, and mint juleps.

  

alex_newlondonAlex Lewis is an independent radio producer and musician living in Philadelphia. He has reported stories for national and local public radio programs, worked as an associate producer with NPR’s World Café with David Dye, and currently produces WHYY’s Newsworks Tonight. In 2014, he co-wrote and produced Going Black: The Legacy of Philly Soul Radio, a radio documentary about the history of Black radio in Philadelphia that premiered on WHYY and aired on over 100 stations around the country. He graduated from Northwestern University with a music degree and studied documentary storytelling at the Transom Story Workshop.

  

IMG_3132Andrew Thompson is a journalist whose work has appeared in the Awl, the Baffler, Philadelphia Magazine and City Paper. He is a graduate of Temple University and lives in South Philadelphia. He enjoys soda water.

   

Aidan Un is a freelance film-maker and aidan picphotographer based in West Philadelphia. He’s worked with youth poets, immigration activists, local musicians, artist-hackers, community radio advocates, Brazilian dancers, student unions, Cambodian bakers, tech start-ups, art educators, community development corporations, and the occasional scrimshaw collector. He finds joy in collaboration and sees making images as a way to discover what’s always been there.

  

brad-larrisonBrad Larrison is a freelance photojournalist and editorial photographer based in Philadelphia. He works for clients including Reuters, WHYY, Haverford College, New York Daily News and many others. His images have appeared in NewsWeek, The Washington Post, The New York Times as well as other national and international publications.

  

yoweiYowei Shaw is an award-winning independent radio producer based in Philadelphia. Her work has been featured on This American Life, NPR, and Studio 360; she’s also worked as an associate producer with NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross. Yowei is also a 2014 USA Knight Fellow and the recipient of the 2013 Leeway Transformation Award. Her life has completely changed, now that she’s upgraded to a standing desk.
